Job Description
DruckenThe Bio Engineering Laboratory at the Departement of Biosystems of ETH Zurich in Basel is inviting applications for a PhD position in in Engineering of Microfluidic in-vitro Barrier Models for Bacterial Lung and Bladder Infections. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student, who will work in a highly international environment in Basel, Switzerland. In the framework of a large National Competence Center of Research (NCCR) “Antiresist” (for more information, ) involving clinicians, academic and industrial research partners across multiple disciplines, a microfluidic platform for studying bacterial lung and bladder infections and testing new antibacterial drugs is currently developed. The platform includes a microfluidic system for culturing advanced in-vitro lung and bladder barrier models (membrane-based organ-on-chip models) and for exposing those to bacteria and potential target drug compounds. A variety of analysis methods (fluorescence microscopy, mass spectroscopy, TEER, permeability assays) is used to analyze and continuously monitor barrier-layer status and viability.Job descriptionThe candidate will further develop a microfluidic platform designed for culturing transwell-based lung and bladder organoid models in close collaboration with infection biologists from the Biozentrum (University of Basel). Specifically, the platform will be used to (1) study mechanisms underlying bacterial infections and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, and (2) evaluate novel treatment strategies. A key objective is to optimize the platform for translational applications that can be used for testing in clinical and industrial settings.ProfileFor this highly interdisciplinary project, a suitable candidate should have:
- A solid background in microengineering, including plastic fabrication methods for microfluidics
- Skills in CAD design and simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL)
- Experience in cell biology, in vitro culture methods, and bioassays
- Experience in confocal microscopy and associated image analysis methods
Experience with transwell-based barrier models and biology is a strong advantage, and basic knowledge of microbiological techniques, including bacterial cultures, sterile handling, and infection assays is highly appreciated. Strong communication skills, a proactive work attitude and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines as well as fluency in English (oral and written) are important assets.WorkplaceWorkplaceWe offer
